Wow, he's grown up so fast! Especially these last six months. In April, when he turned one, he was crawling and standing but not walking, he was saying and signing a few words ("ducky", "up", "juice", "more", "eat", "milk", "bird", "kitty"), he was still breast-feeding on and off. Shocking and amazing that in just six months he has self-weaned and become this happy active little person, running about, pointing and naming everything, raiding drawers and cabinets, sleeping 10 hours through the night, opening every board game box he comes across, climbing into our laps for hugs and kisses, demanding books or juice or someone to help with his shoes, singing, brushing his teeth by himself, having imaginary tea parties... It all happened so fast! He's gotten more stubborn and independent, and occasionally he crumples in tears when he doesn't get what he wants. But he's still a very easy-going, sweet, sympathetic, joyful, resilient, and playful little guy. And he eats EVERYTHING. (That includes, to my amazement, spicy jalepeño chips, jambalaya, and pickled ginger.) We are very lucky parents.
Yesterday morning, he had his 18-month Well Child check-up with our pediatrician at the Family Clinic. No concerns; everything's on track. He's still right on his curve for height and weight, which is a little higher than the average (90th percentile), but judging from our heights -- particularly Johann's -- that's not surprising. Developmentally, he passed all the bars for his age. He walks steady, he drinks from a cup, he can bend over and pick things up, he says "mama" and "papa", he points, he waves, he pinches things between his thumb and forefinger, he can identify various body parts (nose, ears...), etc.
We got flu shots. And fish stickers.
The doctor sent us home with print-outs of the growth charts, along with a long blurb about general developmental things to expect/watch for in his next six months, between now and the next suggested check-up. One of the things on the list was "Speaks from 3 to 50 words."
Obviously every child is unique and milestones are just generalized and not even necessarily the average. I'm not going to seize on them to prove or support how advanced and special my child is -- they're just one of many things to factor. But this one little milestone got me curious about Goob's vocabulary. How many words did he actually know and use now? I had no ballpark number. I sat down and scribbled out a pretty much complete list (I'm sure that I'm forgetting one or two) and was surprised. He's got at least 80 English and German words that he uses independently, without prompting. See below.
